Objectives

International Entrepreneurship is an area of increasing scholarly interest focused on international comparisons of innovative, proactive, and risk-taking business firms and on the cross-border activities of such firms. In May 2000, we held a very successful Doctoral Workshop on International Entrepreneurship with 24 students and faculty representing many parts of the world. The 2nd Annual Workshop will be held May 11-13, 2001, providing an opportunity for 20-25 doctoral students to:

·         Meet senior scholars in the area and discuss with them the most current research being conducted in International Entrepreneurship.

·         Discuss shared interests and current work in International Entrepreneurship with like-minded doctoral students from a variety of universities.

·         Explore academic teaching and career opportunities in International Entrepreneurship

·         Join the expanding community of scholars studying International Entrepreneurship.

Several research projects emerged among the students from our May 2000 Workshop, and we expect the same kinds of exciting opportunities will be available next year! We invite you to join us.

Some of the senior scholars attending:

Howard Aldrich (University of North Carolina), Erkko Autio (Helsinki University of Technology), Pat Dickson (Georgia Institute of Technology), Michael Dowling (University of Regensburg), Michael Hitt, (Arizona State University), David Ku (Georgia Institute of Technology), Karen Loch (Georgia State University), John McIntyre (Georgia Institute of Technology), Ben Oviatt (Georgia State University), Harry Sapienza (University of Minnesota), Shaker Zahra (Georgia State University), Sri Zaheer (University of Minnosota),  and others.

Admission requirements:

Applicants for admission must be currently enrolled in doctoral studies and have completed at least one semester of their program. The selection committee will be especially interested in applications that show a personal focus on entrepreneurship or small business and a clear interest in international issues. The selection committee will also be interested in admitting doctoral students from a variety of universities.  Preference will be given to students who have not attended this workshop previously.

The Workshop:

The Doctoral Workshop in International Entrepreneurship will begin on Friday evening May 11, 2001 with an opening reception and dinner. It will continue on Saturday, May 12, from 8am until 5pm with sessions in which senior scholars and the participating doctoral students discuss their current research and future interests. The Workshop will conclude at noon on Sunday, May 13, after sessions that morning on teaching and building a career in International Entrepreneurship.

Atlanta is among the most internationally oriented cities in the rapidly growing and dynamic Southeastern region of the United States. It is a favorite location of entrepreneurs in high tech, service, and traditional industries. In May, the temperate climate, beautiful foliage, and "Southern" hospitality are especially inviting. The city has lots of interesting history, varieties of excellent restaurants, and great entertainment venues.

Fees, Expenses, and Financial Aid:

Shortly after being admitted, doctoral students must pay a $50 registration fee. All participants will be responsible for their own travel, lodging, and associated expenses. Participants may book lodging at a special rate of approximately $100 per night per room at a nearby hotel. We will facilitate room-sharing arrangements among participants. The Workshop sponsors will provide dinner on Friday evening, lunch Saturday, and light breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday morning. Ten participants will, upon admission, be offered $500 stipends to attend.
